Halon fire extinguisher recharge
Feb 23rd, 2016 at 6:31pm

The gauge on the halon bottle in my car is reading recharge. Can it be recharged?  What I'm reading on the web is that halon is pretty much banned in BC these days.

Not legal to recharge Halon for private use in Canada.
I got grilled at the border importing a new bottle from the USA, but it was NOT Halon, but the new 1301 fluid that is sold to replace Halon. It required the Border Guard to look the regulations up in the great book, and he finally agreed it was not listed as a Halon and was not banned.

Im sorry. I can't figure out which post you're referring to . Tried doing a forum search here but no luck.

I've read the CACC rules but I can't see where it states as to whether IPE or IP3 class requires a fire extinguisher.

I'm pretty sure all classes require a fire suppression system... But don't quote me on that one. Regardless of whether or not the rules say you need one, I would probably fit a bottle in there anyways just in case something catastrophic were to happen and so the car doesn't turn into a human barbecue

The IP class rules require the car to comply with the car preparation rules of SCCA for the IT class. The SCCA GCR has the requirements for the fire system required. For IP only a hand held extinguisher is needed.

B. Hand-Held Fire Extinguisher Requirements
The following are acceptable for Touring, Spec Miata, Super Touring
and Improved Touring cars:
1. Halon 1301, 1211 or Dupont FE-36, two (2) pound minimum
capacity by weight.
2. Dry chemical, two (2) pound minimum with a positive indicator
showing charge. Chemical: 10 BC Underwriters Laboratory
rating, potassium bicarbonate (Purple K) recommended,
1A10BC Underwriters Laboratory rating multipurpose, ammonium
phosphate and barium sulfate or Monnex.
3. AFFF (aqueous film forming foam) or equivalent surfactant
foam material, 2.25 liter minimum capacity (by volume). All
AFFF fire bottles shall incorporate a functional pressure gauge.
4. The fire extinguisher shall be securely mounted in the cockpit.
All mounting brackets shall be metal and of the quick release
type.
