Tesla Powered Cobra Race Car
Feb 2nd, 2017 at 4:48pm

Thought you might be interested in a new car that we are building.  It has the motor from a Tesla Model S, the battery pack from a Kia Soul EV, a custom CAD designed chassis and suspension, and a classic Shelby Cobra body!

Youtube video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci8kHAb6iVw

The motor has 310kW peak power and  600 nM torque from 0-6000 RPM - gradually tapering off until the 16,000 RPM redline!   However, it does remain to be seen how long the motor can be run without Power Limiting itself due to overheating.  This will be one of the key areas of development & testing for 2017.

Battery pack is a 30kW-hr unit from a Kia Soul EV.   Initially we will run Time Attack & Autocross sessions due to the shorter run length.   Eventually, we will run some selected races at reduced power levels.  Battery run time and length to recharge between sessions are all issues we will be battling with.

The car is being built to GT standards (Shelby Cobras are classified as GT1 cars) and will probably run as a GTO car.  Total weight with driver should be in the 1800 pound range.

It has the seat and steering wheel from the Tiger, so it will always feel "Vintage" to me!

The car will make it's debut at the June 10/11th CACC weekend.  We will run Time Attack on Saturday, and a CW2 race on Sunday.   See you at the track!

Hey Doug,

Does it sound like a 289 or 427 Cobra?

Thanks for all the interest and support we received at our debut race weekend.   This was the first time we had run at high speed speed and we were happy with the results.   As expected, battery range and time to recharge (4.5 hrs) will be an issue for races. Sorry for having to run a generator all weekend to recharge!  Hopefully at some time we will get a 220V outlet at the track!   We managed to finish the CW2 race on Sunday by setting the maximum power at 50%.    Lots of potential though, even at lower power levels, as we tune the suspension and get comfortable with the car.  Look for us at the July and August races.

great to see the car on the track!
re the generator, I know there is enough engineering genius in your camp to design and build a sound box for the generator. Wink
