A very interesting article, Keith.

I suspect that one down-side of how much racing safety has increased since Clark's day is that facing danger and tragedy together fosters esprit de corps that crosses the national, corporate, and even personal boundaries that normally divide us.  As the article says, it's difficult to imagine a company like Firestone making that kind of choice today.  The bond of mutual respect that made it possible is much more rare in a safer world.

Not that I want to turn back the clock, at least with regard to safety.  It's just a comment about how much things have changed in forty-odd years.
