Title: Turn 7 tires and more
Post by collin_Jackson on Oct 13th, 2016 at 9:54am
First thanks to everyone for doing what you do!

1) I would like to see a discussion on the safety hazard to the turn 7 tires.
I know this has been discussed before but I would like to see if I am the only one that gets scared, going at them at 70 miles and hour.
I would like to see a reasonably high curb installed that would do the same thing, only safer!
Or a mandatory black flag rule.
We discussed this at the vintage race as well and they were deemed a hazard by the open wheel guys.
-Again I may be getting old but I don't think I am along on this one.

2) My understanding is there is talk of changing turn 1 !!!!!
    What??
Great corner now (second best corn behind turn 4).
As a guy that got clobbered there, I would like to say us drivers are 100% of the problem.
Fine us, suspend us, and the corner will be way more fun.

3) Loss the 5-minute engine rule. It sucks and causes people to show up at the 1 minute as there engine
oil needs to be hot enough (Especially for the first session).

Otherwise I enjoyed racing at Mission.
Love the assigned pit spots! It is the best pit system I have ever seen! Thx!

Colin;

Great points. You need to show up at the club meetings and discuss them..

Flatten the curb in 7a and you negate any issues with the tire bundle, although I do agree that it's better off not being there in general. We've already had one rollover because of them, why wait around to see another one? There's been some close calls this year that I've seen, (both in my car and spectating) would be a shame to see someone's weekend ruined by those tires.

Turn 1 is news to me... anyone else know any more?

I think its time for a couple redos around the track. Turn 7 a-b needs new aggressive BUMP curbs that will rattle your fillings, Move 7A back 5 feet,  and get rid of any Tires that could cause more damage than they are worth in 7B.
I was told once that Mission is the worst track in North America on brakes and could only be compared to a track called BlackHawk in the USA. After watching video of Blackhawk I would say even that track has more FLOW than mission.

Also was wondering if the Executive would comment of the use of the Motocross track area or if this has even been asked of the Landlord ???

One last comment , Get rid of the jump at Turn 3,  or for hevens sake Name it. Maybe  (Deers Leap)
;D

Hello,  just a couple of comments on the previous suggestions.  While the tire bundle is not ideal this is what the sanctioning body has implemented to keep competitors from short cutting the turn. Cones are not a deterent. Fines for those hitting the cones could work but would need a volunteer to monitor the turn and repot infractions . We have a big enough challenge manning the turns, would you volunteer? I have put forward changing the turn 7 area to include a "bus stop " chicane into the former motocross pit area and utilising the  paved turn 8 that was never used. Other options may by available if the custom car commits to leveling the motorcross track.
I am not aware of any conversation regarding turn one.
The turn three bump is what it is, Many portions of the track are paved over unstable ground and are sinking, Before we invest in new pavement we need to consider the cost of redoing the portions that may need remedy.  Please attend club and CACC meetings ,this is where decisions are made.

Thx Roland

I will see if I can attend.

Adding a bus stop and using turn 8 is a great idea!
-Eliminates the worst hazard on the track (IE: one in a passing zone)
If that is too much cash, then a cheaper solution would be a high curb where the tires are now.
-One that will definitely rattle the teeth on even a b-spec driver.
Either way we get a passing zone, without the danger of the tire bundle.

thx

I think a high curb would be much more dangerous for an open wheel car than the tires. You might want to do a little homework on that, any video or pictures i have seen  with a formula car getting it wrong and hitting those high curbs in most cases sends them airborne and to often upside down.
FF/FC some of these cars only have less than 2 inches of ground clearance this means you will make full contact with the frame and destroy a lot more than you would collecting the tires.

I just don't see why the tires are such a problem in all the years they have been there  in open wheel race group it's never been a problem except for the times we have had contact with passing cars the tires weren't the cause of contact.
If contact is made in that corner and we have a high curb i believe the out come would be a lot worse in a formula car.
The lap times aren't going to get any faster with the tires removed and a huge curb in place because you wouldn't want to hit either one so why spend the more on curbs when tires are free.

just my 2 cents
Alan

tire bundle in 7 is very dangerous.there has to be a better solution. If it is a cacc mandate it should be brought up at that meeting as well.

Hello. FYI. The turn 7 area is the tech lanes for the custom car club. They would not allow a high curb in that area.

Here's a couple ideas - a line of those plastic parking lot poles with rubber/flex attachments to the ground. Park a Busters truck in the runoff area and let them tow any car that hits the poles, driver pays for the tow and impound release fee. Put a CW1/2 turn 7 highlight reel together and you'll have tow truck operators lining up outside the gate every weekend!

Second great idea - dig up the inside of the corner a couple inches, fill with oil and have a bag full of feathers three feet in from the apex. Should be entertaining at least.

And if you think these are dumb, here's the best one - stack a bunch of tires in there, adding more stuff that cars can hit is all the rage! Oh, nevermind.

Was there ever an option of just not doing anything? If folks wanna jump over it that bad, let them.

playing with my phone, I know this would be expensive and I don't know if you guys  could even get the dirt bike track area, but wouldn't this take care of the tire bundle issue?

I agree with McColl; the tires have been there for many thousands of laps and there have been very few problems. Cones and rumble strips were tried and they were a constant problem.
I've raced open and closed wheel cars through 7A and B, it's a great chicane!
A high curb in 7B could cause open wheel (and low closed wheel) cars some serious frame damage.

Dave D; the reason the chicane was put there in the first place was to slow cars down through turn 8. The ASN/FIA out of Toronto nixed the original design (which was similar to what you are suggesting).
