UPDATE: Ashcroft January 16, 2013

Provided the present depth of the ice continues to harden up and deepen and the miniscule air pockets revert to cold clear ice it looks like we may still have an event this year.

Tentatively scheduled for Feb. 23/24, 2013 we are trying to put on a fun for all weekend and include as many ice racing activities as is possible, maybe even some solo stuff so all you non wheel to wheel types can still experience the thrill of being on the ice at speed and trying to keep it all going in the right direction !

(Unlike the video Mike posted we do not have walls and armco lining our track that you can smash into, just acres and acres of ice and snow to slowly, gently slow you down and let you get back under control !)

But if any of you open wheel guys want to come up with your video cameras to prove you're just as good as that guy, let us know and we'll make some time for you   Shocked

So, "Fun-for-all" - does that mean that a used ice racer from a few eons ago could actually come up and drive a car without the obligatory 1 year novice program?? As we used to say, that would be more fun than sliced cheese!!

Talk nice to me Paul and I might be persuaded into draggin' the chili pot out of retirement for your big event. Maybe I could even find the turkey deep fryer and do a bird and yam fries. Remember when that used to happen more often than not?

I like Mike's you tube video. It's kind of like the Magnum ice series in Linden Ontario where they flood a field in front of some horsey grandstands with 350,000 litres of water over the dirt. At least they don't have to worry about open water.

I hope you get a weekend in Paul, I would be severely tempted to attend..............long as the Oasis is still open.....n'yuk n'yuk, n'yuk

Yeah, I forgot about that.

OK, Paul - items for the activity roster:

- C/R bowling at the start/finish line during lunch break
- Shopping cat races, you pick the location
- Tag team boat races (as per evening events)
- "cup" stacking at the Oasis?
- Lighting a Coleman stove in -20C weather
- Unsticking frozen parking brake on the tow vehicle at 5 am.

I could go on and on, anyone else??

You guys are embarrassing !
Nothing you have mentioned actually involves ice racing at all. Sure you guys did that before, during or after the ice racing weekends, back when Beer companies and cigarette companies sponsored the weekend but these days all we are allowed to do is get in our cars and race around a frozen lake, how boring for you that must sound ! Sorry just the sign of the times !

While the racing was fun (if the the car would start and run) it represented only a small part of the totality happening on any given ice racing weekend.  A spud gun or three would be fun; anyone got some fireworks left over from July 1st/Halloween?  Bob....still got that hot-tub?  And yeah, we all got to claim we were "Cart" racers!  And how about a few "Bunbury turns" just for old times sake?  Are triple digit numbers allowed these days?  Now where'd I leave that Datsun?

As our one and only weekend that is planned for this year kind of negates much of a Championship Season we will be trying to offer activities that might get a few newbies interested in giving it a try. Rallycross can be done one at a time on our course so that eliminates the potential for wheel to wheel catastrophes. Get out the stopwatches and see what you can do against the clock and the course without worrying about bumping into anyone. There was a mention of a ProSolo type event being tried. We might be able to plow two identical courses side by side (but separated by a decent sized snow bank) down the middle of the lake and let you go at it mano et mano. First one to the end wins, swap sides and go at it again, not sure how to figure out ties without timing it but you get the idea. Just throwing out some ideas to get more folks to come up and try it on the ice. After a weekend of this your daily commute in the city will be a piece of cake and you can watch all the other gorby's ditching their cars at the first hint of slippery conditions and if you decide you want to go whole hog some time in the future and become a real ice racer like the rest of us so much the better.
Let us know if anyone's interested. PM me if you are.

from Hamlet....

Gee, thanks for the stern lecture and reminder of my decaying life.
???

I'm glad you are searching for ideas to build the ice racing up again. We were so uneducated years ago when we had regular entry fields over 30 cars, dances in Cache Creek with 190 people, Happy Hours with dozens and dozens of people, 50/50 draws that exceeded $300. AND as much enjoyment wheel to wheel racing as anyone could stand in a weekend. And somehow we managed to actually win a few races and championships along the way. How did we ever do that - oh yeah, we called it
FUN
back then. Not sur wht social media calls in today.

I wish you all the best with your endeavors, I'll stay away. Loud & clear. Maybe me and some of the other geriatrics can change the channel, if we can find the remote.

Lorne, don't get me wrong, we would love to have as many ice racing enthusiasts come up as possible. We don't do any drug tests or make you pee in a beaker to prove you have never used performance de-enhancing substances and if you keep your windows closed you can smoke up a storm in your car as long as you are at least 6 metres away from any other competitor (which will be quite likely when you're way at the back, ouch !, sorry I had to )  Shocked It's not that I don't remember what you guys did back then, it's just that if I want to keep doing the racing thing I can't keep doing some of the things you guys called fun ! Look we all think the racing is fun and nobody will ever disagree with that so get your car out of storage, put some new belts in it (or just take some out of your road race car) and come up and show us how the old gang used to have ice racing fun. We are happy to be shown a thing or two !

The concept of 'fun racing at the lake' is years overdue, I hope you haven't left it too late.
BTW two 'identical ice race tracks' is not possible.
'Hare and Hounds' or staggered starts or one car starting on either side of the track would be fun (always worked at Agassiz).
Allowing Solo, Rally, Autocross etc is a GREAT idea, also years overdue.
To state the obvious; what worked 20 years ago doesn't work today. It's a shame that it had to come to canceling a season to come up with all these 'new' ideas! Angry

Obviously two identical tracks would be impossible to create so we'd do the best we can and and time each run on both sides and combine the two times to break a tie ? That's a new idea. We have offered track time to all the autocross clubs for years and not once ever to my knowledge did one participant show up and ask to take a couple of hot laps. Maybe we weren't welcoming enough ? Don't know what else we could do but the offer is open to them and anyone else again this year. Apparently an rallycross group wants to come up and they have had to limit their entries to 30 cars. Wow I wish we could get that many and tell the rest to come again next year, just joking ! But apparently we true ice racers may be a dying breed who still want to risk our cars in wheel to wheel action on the ice and rallycross on the ice is becoming more attractive with it's less inherent body contact issues. We'll see how the future dictates what we will be doing in the years to come. As long as there is ice that is.

Run the 'fun day' like a lapping day; some groups run one at a time, some run 'point to pass' and some sessions for race groups.
You can run race studs at the end of the day and street and/or rubber in the morning. That way if the studs tear up the track you have overnight to fix it.
Drivers bringing their race cars for guests can put them in appropriate groups with rubber or street stud tires.

Seriously, though, I'll stay tuned and if it actually does happen I'd love come up to Barnes and man a corner or whatever.  Unfortunately I'm fresh out of race cars, belts, helmets, etc., otherwise it would be great to "get sideways".
