Tires at Apex of Turn 7B
May 27th, 2013 at 9:20am

I find the new stack of tires placed at the apex of turn 7B quite dangerous for Open Wheel car drivers. I am afraid if an Open Wheel car hits this tire wall they will be prone to neck or head injuries. I understand they were put there as some cars were cutting this corner but I am suggesting to put the cone back and assess a penaty for hitting it. Lets play safe.

Thanks for posting this Richard!  I was meaning to mention this too.  Even in a Closed Wheel car the tire bundle feels like an added hazard.  I too would be in favour of the bringing back the cones and enforcing them with the black flag.  I suspect a strictly enforced 30 second stop and go for each cone you touch would keep the cones in place 99% of the time.

I  also agree the tire wall could be dangerous to open wheel drivers ,a penalty is  a good idea  but perhaps only a 10 second stop and go .. just my 2 cents    thx Todd #124 Smiley

Have you guys not noticed there are a few 4600lb blocks around the track, do you hit any of them Roll Eyes???
I competed with a lot of O/W guys the last two race weekends, I've not heard a single complaint from any them. Additionally we ran all day Sunday in the rain and still managed to go around the tires.
Take a look around the world from Australia to Monaco, tires are used everywhere. Wink

FYI cones DON'T work; rumble strips DON'T work; the same people 'short track' all the time, tires WORK!

Keith is 100% correct....the tires work, are used in all levels of racing, and that is what we are going to continue to use at that location.

In addition, the tires are all bolted together, but not fastened to the pavement, so if you do hit them, they will move, but not scatter.

Since the creation of that bundle at the beginning of this season, the infractions at that corner have basically stopped.

As a second year open wheel driver, I was grateful for the tires on that turn. It's the first weekend I can recall where the cones weren't scattered all over that turn after someone had run through them. I didn't need to adjust my driving to accommodate for the tire placement. Personally, I like the effect the tires have had and would like to see them kept in place.
