next years head and neck restraints
Oct 5th, 2011 at 3:16pm

ok, my apologies if this topic has been covered but I could not find any info............
CACC will require FIA certified head and neck restraints in 2012.  By searching the web there are some that are SFI certified only.  CACC accepts SFI for belts and suits, will the rule be updated for SFI acceptance, or are we restricted to FIA certification only?  Also can anyone direct me to a source for a list of CACC acceptable systems, and distributors.  I assume I am not the only one concerned and confused.

thanks, don

Best bet is to look at the FIA website and find a device that is listed. Hopefully there will be more info available at the CACC Fall meeting.

Some earlier HANS devices were SFI approved retroactively by the manufacturer. (Units have to returned to HANS, where they are inspected, upgraded if needed, and SFI certified)
But not FIA certified.
Does that mean these won't be legal for CACC?

The last I heard was that only FIA devices would be accepted. Check with CACC. They need to follow the requirements of ASN Canada.

I have one of those SFI only devices.. I'm definitely not buying another, but it would suck to not be able to run at Mission anymore.

You will have to lobby CACC about this.

On a somewhat related note, it was announced today that SFI will require recertification on HNR devices every 5 years  Roll Eyes

Recertification only costs $15... But tethers "should" be replaced every 5 years (and will be replaced by Hans at standard price), plus shipping from and to Canada. Great, another $200 every now and then. Just wait until it becomes a 2 year thing, like belts.

Just had a quick read through the GCR appendixes.. The rule reads the device must comply with the FIA spec.. Is having a sticker part of the FIA specs? My older Hans device complies with the specs, but no sticker.

Also noticed that my current (FIA..) belts are illegal - the GCR requires 3" shoulder belts and makes no exception for using 2" belts with a Hans device.

Can anyone give me a quick run down of the rule change process with CACC?.. There is zero chance that I'm buying a new Hans and new belts to run at Mission again.

The Cacc rules regarding restraint harness assemblies will probably be changed to reflect the "HANS" device only certified shoulder belts. Attend the fall meeting and learn how.

Shoulder harnesses that are marked for use with a "HANS DEVICE ONLY" tag would be accepted as all drivers will require  some sort of device. The usual requirements regarding the expiry date of the harnesses would of course apply.

I had been wondering about the outcome of this discussion as well, unfortunately I wasn't able to attend the meeting.

Cheers,
Darwin.

does anyone know if there has been a decision to accept SFI approved Forward Head Restraint Devices (why can't we just call them HANS) in CACC?

"HANS" is a trade mark. "Forward Head Restraint Devices" is the generic term which would apply to any such device.

I am certain that Mike Kearne will advise when a resolution to this question has been reached. It's a busy time of year, with lots going on.
