This month 50 years ago club member Charlie Godecke (holding trophy in photo) and race partner Bert Laakmann won “The Province 500 7Hour Endurance race” at Westwood. This came as a follow up to their 1973 win. The duo easily won the race completing 309 laps.
They were assessed a 3 lap penalty but were still 20 laps ahead of the Datsun of Andy Barcheck and Loren St.Lawrence. 28 cars started the race which included everything from Corvettes to Gremlins. 18 teams managed to cross the finish line at the end of this grueling race that ended in the dark.
We enjoy seeing Charlie still doing laps around the paddock, say hi next time you see him and he might stop and talk. Its like having a conversation with a living history book.
Cheers Charlie.
